Term 1 Week 8 Learning Log

Monday


We learnt about a new chapter which is about Romeo and Juliet. Many people would have know about the story. We were then work in a pair. Mr Chua gave us each a handout about character analysis. Register 1-10 were told to do Romeo and the rest were given the other specific character. We were instructed to write down the character trait of our own character we were given. Mr Chua let us watch a short video clip of the movie Romeo and Juliet. I wrote down the character traits that Romeo have while watching the short video. After the movie was done, Mr Chua told us to write it down. He then gave a piece of A4 white paper. He said that we need to work out with our partner to do the pair work. We need to combine our individual work and from there, we have to take 4 character trait and wrote it down in the A4 white paper. We also need to decorate it as nicely as we can. This will be graded. We need to hand it up by next Monday.

Friday

In the morning

Basically, Mr Chua gave us back our Qualities of Mercy worksheet. We go through the 4 religion about why their own religion God is merciful. Firstly, Mr Chua told the Buddhist student to stand up. One of them have to volunteer themselves to explain why their religion God is merciful. Its quite long the explanation but we have to respect others religion. That's important. Secondly, Mr Chua told the Christian student to stand up. Like usual, one of them have to volunteer themselves to explain why their religion God is merciful. This also applies to the Hindu's and Muslim's student. We were have to write down in the worksheet that we were given back. After it was all settled, Mr Chua gave us a piece of handout. It was about 'Imagery' based on the chapter of Romeo and Juliet. Mr Chua explain some sentence that could be found in our collated Shakespeare text. We have to write down in the worksheet that were given.

In the afternoon [make-up lessons]

We were told to take our pencil case and literature file and line up outside the classroom. We were brought to the Movers and Shakers gallery. We were given a piece of handout and were told to find a partner. After it was all settle, Mr Chua explain the things we need to do. We were have to work in pairs and answer all the question in the worksheet. We have to search the answer from the Movers and Shakers gallery where basically it was about past time history. After all the answer have been answered, we need to give back the handout to Mr Chua. After everybody have done so, Mr Chua brief us before the lessons end. He reminded us to complete our individual work on the character traits and the pair works, complete the 'Imagery' worksheet and our form about 'update on learning log evaluation for CA1' must be sign by our parents. All of it must be handed in by next Monday. Mr Chua also reminded us about copy other classmates work or post in the literature blog. He does not allow the person to private his or her blog just because of other classmate copy their work. For him, the matter will not settle. He asked, what if the person copy on the other classmates work? For me, it was rather true. If we notice our classmate copy other work in the literature blog, i guess this should not be taken for granted. After the briefing and reminders, we were then released.

Term 1 Week 7 Learning Log

Friday

Mr Chua told us to take out out planner to write down the topics that will be tested during the upcoming Literature common tests. Below are the topics that going to be tested.

1) Cinquains [ either based on Topics or Character]
2) Macbeth
3) Merchant of Venice [Antonio,Shylock,Portia, Bassanio]
4) Qualities of Mercy [Portia's speech]
5) Friendship between Antonio and Bassanio
6) Revenge
7) Prejudice/Racism
8) Romeo and Juliet [character]
-sonnet
-imagery

For Romeo and Juliet, we are going to learn it next week.
After Mr Chua told us to write those down in our planner, we continued about Merchant of Venice. We discussed our answers based on our homework that we were given during our last Literature lessons. During the discussion, Mr Chua told us to hand up our homework as he noticed that some of us was writing it down in the worksheet. After all the discussion, we were given an envelope. We have to write down our friend address. We were then have to take back our Friendship card and line up to take a stamp from Mr Chua. Then we have to paste the stamp on the envelope with our card inside it. We have to seal it then return it back to Mr Chua. After all of it have settled, Mr Chua gave a piece of hand out about an article about Buddhist and Taoist leaders accept pastor's apology. Based on this, Mr Chua told us to reflect whether we will forgive or not forgive a person who insult our own religion. Some of my classmate said 'No' while others said 'Yes'. We were reminded that our own religion God is merciful.

Last but not least, we needed to give our own opinion whether they have the right or not to force Shylock change his religion. Basically, my opinion is that nobody has the right to force someone from other religion to convert their religion to other religion that they were force to. This is because, it is based on the belief of person towards a religion and the religion God.

That's all about it. Next week, we will learn a new topic which is about Romeo and Juliet. Stay tune for my upcoming post.

Term 1 Week 6 Learning Log
Monday

On last Monday, we continued learning about Merchant of Venice. Mr Chua gave us a worksheet about Merchant of Venice. There are a passage and 3 questions we need to answer. Mr Chua told us to read the passage and then answer the following question. He gave us 10 minutes to answer. The 1st question, "Do you think Shylock is right to demand to murder Antonio? Explain yourself clearly". I answered "Yes." Then i explained why. The 2nd question, "Shylock has sworn both to heaven and his soul to cut a pound of flesh from Antonio' body. Give one possible reason why he would do so". My reason was that 'Shylock got the right upon the bond'.
The 3rd question was that, " Is Shylock the hero or villain of the story? Explain". My answer was that "Shylock is the villain. He still wanted to take a pound of Antonio's flesh".

Next, Mr Chua gave us another worksheet. There stated a rather long passage between Shylock and Antonio. Then based on the passage, we need to answer whether Shylock has a good reason to demand his pound of flesh. Thus, we need to explain our answer with close reference to the passage. My answer was that "Yes. Antonio complains about Shylock business but suddenly,Antonio wanted to borrow money from him. Antonio still, being a hot-headed. This is because he wanted to lend the money from Shylock but he still wanted to call him a dog again, to spit on him again and to reject him again." Antonio and Shylock could not get along well with each other as both were from different religion. Antonio is a Christian while Shylock is a Jew. Behind the worksheet, there are 3 question. We need to do it as our homework and hand it up during our next Literature lesson.

Term 1 Week 5 Learning Log

Monday

We had our Literature lesson outside our class. It was held at the grass path in front of our class. Its rather quite interesting to learn outside our classroom as its more convenient and it could saved the electricity by switching off the fan and light.
So we continued about 'Merchant of Venice'. Then Mr Chua taught us from the text about 'Friendship'. Antonio wanted to sacrifice his life for his best friend, Bassanio, because he could not get the money to pay his debt from Shylock which the money was for Bassanio. This shows that 'Friendship does need a bit or more sacrifices for the beloved ones'.
So Mr Chua called out some of us to share what is 'Friendship' are all about in our own words. After all the sharing, we went up to our classroom. We were given an assignment. We were given a postcard. We were told to write message for our best friend and decorated it nicely. We were also need to write down our best friend address. During the next Literature lesson, Mr Chua will collect it back and help us post the mail.
